Summary |
Looks at the gigantic, ancient Egyptian statue of the Great Sphinx, a crouching lion, human-headed creature. Asks who built it, how it was built, and who or what it represents. Follows a team of scientists who are looking at the Sphinx in the context of the geology, history, archeology, and architecture of ancient Egypt. Also follows a team of builders, who are creating scaled down replicas of the Great Sphinx to try to shed light on the techniques used by ancient stone carvers to create this huge limestone sculpture. Stresses the urgency of these investigations as the Sphinx is being swallowed up by an urban neighborhood and traffic, tourism, and construction are trembling it apart. |
