After his father dies, Prince Ahkin, whose royal blood allows him to control the power of the sun, ascends the throne and must choose a wife to help him lead the Chicome people. Tribal leaders each send a daughter, and Ahkin quickly is drawn to Mayana, who is descended from the goddess of water. The pair connect, but Mayana's desire to change the ritualistic blood sacrifices imposed by the throne threatens tradition, while a rival waits for an opportunity to seize the throne.
