The unique original, printed about 1580 in Edinburgh by Alexander Arbuthnet, lacks t.-p. and 4 leaves of signature I. It is a free Scottish version of two French poems, which form parts of the Roman d'Alexandre; "Les voeus du paon", by Jacques de Longuyon, with part of "Li fuerres de Gadres" prefixed, the latter by one Eustache, rewritten by Alexandre de Bernay.
The introduction (v.1, p.[xiii]-cclxxxiv) contains a full discussion of Barbour's authorship, which is disputed, and comparison between the "Buik" and his "Bruce".
