Summary Presents films produced from the 1940s through '60s featuring three lengthy shorts that illustrate the strong bond the American family has with that most sacred and noble of national institutions... the local gas station.
Contents Honeymoon detour / Joseph Crehan -- Penny turns pro -- Plug hat / Nick Grinde.
Note Honeymoon Detour (b&w) proves that Americans love gas stations as much as they love being married. Service-station owner Henry Morgan and his wife have been married 15 years and still haven't taken a honeymoon! "Why, it's almost indecent!" says the Mrs. So off they go and promptly break down in Center City. After checking into an Atlas service station, attendant JOSEPH CREHAN (the good doctor of Street Corner and Because of Eve) discovers the Morgan's car has a worn fan belt and radiator hose, and dirty spark plugs. In fact, Henry is so impressed with this Atlas station that he not only takes notes, but leaves the wife at the hotel so he can drive around checking out other stations.
Penny Turns Pro (b&w) shows us the path by which a playboy miraculously transforms himself into a gas pumper. Annoyed that his date has called him "a clown," Buck "Penny" Pendleton speeds home and crashes into the local Standard station.
Plug Hat (b&w) opens with a wedding gone bad. In a hail of rice and well wishes, a bride and groom race from the family mansion where they were just hitched, to the family car all decked out in tin cans. But the car won't start! As with Penny Turns Pro, this stars crusty old ED DEARING as another crusty old station owner, this time directed by NICK GRINDE, best remembered for his Columbia mad-doctor movies with Boris Karloff.
