Summary |
The author limited this study on the rapidly developing Chinese UAV industry in two key ways. First, the paper focuses on UAVs designed for the PLA and other military, rather than those platforms intended chiefly for civilian and law enforcement usage. While there is some overlap between military and civilian UAV R & D, the paper concentrates on key R & D centers that produce military UAVs. Second, the paper covers only the chief aviation integrators in the UAV industry; it does not address developers of avionics and other components. Today, China's UAV industry is comprised of a variety of defense firms and academic research groups. The industry has swelled in the past decade due to high demand from military and civilian customers. China now is developing UAVs with increased payload capacities, longer range, and greater endurance. The industry appears to focus on developing UAVs for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and military communications relay, but likely is developing and operating UAVs for electronic warfare (EW) and lethal missions as well. Furthermore, China's UAV industry recently has made advancements in armed UAVs and unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) development, including those with low-observable technology. This report first assesses the People's Liberation Army's employment of UAVs. It then details the development and diversification of China's UAV industry and concludes with an outlook for the industry's production, technological advancements, and entry into the global market. |
