The plan of the author has been to give an account of the overland emigration to the Pacific during the epoch of 1849 as nearly as possible in the words of contemporaneous writers. Where a single narrative would not suffice, the diaries of several travelers have been placed together in a sort of literary mosaic. cf. Pref.
