Summary The institutionalization of qualitative educational and biographical research in educational science dates back to 1978. It was Dieter Baacke and Theodor Schulze who, by focusing on the scholarly exploration of autobiographical and literary sources for educational purposes, not only formulated the basic principles of a biographically oriented, narrative pedagogy at that time but also provided programmatic guidance for "cultivating pedagogical understanding." Together with other experts in the field, they also opened up space and attention to approaches and methods of qualitative research as a whole.Forty years later, this volume takes a closer look at the milestones from theoretical, methodological, and methodical perspectives. What achievements have been made since then? Which of the original objectives remain unfulfilled? What challenges, ruptures, and turning points can be identified? The contributions thus shed light on the advances, changes, and setbacks in biographical pedagogy as well as in qualitative educational and biographical research.
