Summary |
"This edition of canzoni villanesche for three voices (1545) and madrigals for four voices (1548) reflects the didactic bent of a Neapolitan composer, poet, teacher, and theorist whose works seem like paradigms of the musical and notational practices of his time. Cimello's versatility is demonstrated in compositions ranging from refined settings of serious madrigal poems (many by local poets associated with the Accademia dei Sereni) to comical settings of his own poems in city dialect, including six mascherate conceived for theatrical events associated with carnival. His works display imaginative variety with respect to pacing, scoring, and novel techniques, notably a poetic-musical quodlibet based on incipits of madrigals from Gardano's Primo libro de diversi autori and a virtuosic battle piece in which three soldiers imitate the sounds of trumpets, drums, and artillery. Translations of the poems are provided with commentary to establish literary or folkloristic contexts and to clarify obscure metaphors." -- Provided by publisher. |
