"Haydn composed this mass for the Benedictine convent of Frauenwörth on Chiemsee. Completed on 5 August 1793, the work was probably intended for the service accompanying the taking of final vows on 19 August 1793 by the composer's friend Ursula Oswald. This mass represents Haydn's late style, in which a large-scale cyclic unity is achieved through the ongoing transformation and recall of thematic materials among its several movements." -- Provided by publisher. |
