One act. Based on the play "The devil of a wife," 1686, written by Thomas Jevon, with possible assistance from his brother-in-law Thomas Shadwell. Adapted by Charles Coffey and John Mottley. Theophilus Cibber reduced the play from three acts to one. cf. Cambridge bibliography of English literature.
Cibber is said to have introduced into the play songs by his father and by Rochester. cf. Dictionary of national biography.
A sequel written by Coffey entitled "The merry cobler" appeared in 1735.
