Summary |
A comprehensive description of Auschwitz from a psychological and sociological perspective, based on documentation and Langbein's own experience as an inmate of the camp between 1942-44. Examines the organization of the camp, statistical data, the forced labor conditions, the methods of extermination, the medical experiments, and different forms of humiliation used to destroy the inmate's individuality. Notes the solidarity among the inmates, but also violence, collaboration with the Nazis, and antisemitic attitudes. Describes the mentality and sadistic behavior of the Nazi physicians. Rejects the tendency to demonize Nazi leaders, and concludes that the concentration camp was an instrument forged by a totalitarian system which adopted genocide as a political project and succeeded in mobilizing a great part of the German people in the implementation of its goals. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism). |
