The daughter of a man murdered for a California gold mine deed follows the killer from Illinois to California on the transcontinental railroad. In doing so she soon finds that she is no longer the hunter but the prey. Along the way, she is faced with the decision as to whom to trust on her journey, a China-bound missionary who wants to marry her, or a wandering Texan who offers to protect her for a price.
