Summary "For twenty-three years during his active musical career, Marc-Antoine Charpentier served as the principal composer to Molière's Troupe du Roy (predecessor of the Comédie-Française). From 1672 to 1695 he provided incidental music for twenty productions, including revivals of Molière's comedies La comtesse d'Escarbagnas, Le mariage forcé, Le malade imaginaire (of which the recently discovered premier intermède is included here), and Le Sicilien. Consisting of overtures in the French style, dances and ballet-pantomime, vocal solos, duets, and ensembles (with and without obbligato instruments), this music confirms Charpentier's position as the most significant theatrical composer in Paris during the latter half of the seventeenth century." -- Provided by publisher.
