| Summary |
Exploring the social structure of Elizabethan England, its economy, intellectual developments, religion and government. Descriptions of the Queen from youth to old age, as seen through English and foreign eyes, form part of a selection reflecting the habits, tastes and views of contemporary Englishmen. Considerable space is devoted to the advances in intellectual thought and to the achievements in literature and passages from Spencer, Bacon and Donne illustrate the increasing critical attitude to order and tradition. Insights into education include reports of conditions in the schools, some savage criticism from Sir Walter Raleigh and Hobbes's denunciation of university education as the core of popular radicalism and rebellion. Final sections on religion and politics show the emergence of Anglicanism and Catholic and Puritan dissent, and the achievements and failures of government administration. |
