"The original of the book was printed in San Francisco in 1877 ... Type and all known books were destroyed by the Great Fire of 1906. Fortunately, in 1932, a copy of the book was received by the author from an unknown party in Oregon. The original writing was prompted by the desire to describe the doings of, the then most conspicuous mining speculator, Shadrach S. Stevens. As this happened in September, 'seventy-seven, the author, Schmidt, and his assistant, Sallie Sparkles, decided to do a serio-comic story in which no word should be used unless it commenced with the letter "S"--P.
