Contents Introduction: The West in image and myth -- Claiming and settling the wilderness -- Westward the empire -- The noble Native American -- Cultures in conflict -- Natural cathedrals of sublimity -- The cowboy and the buffalo -- Visions of an enchanted land.
Summary This book celebrates a century of discourse between American artists and the great cultural and intellectual issues that shaped this nation's vision of its frontier wilderness. The myth of the American West -- for it was largely myth -- profoundly influenced the artists who sought to express America's emerging identity during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In order to examine more precisely these issues and the reactions of the artists to them, this volume explores key themes in western American painting. Accompanied by superb color reproductions, seven of these themes will be considered within the context of the American art historical and cultural heritage. Artists included are Remington, Russell, Bierstadt, Moran, O'Keeffe, and Bingham.
