A Dominican family with fourteen children tries to succeed in the United States. The central character is Iliana who attends college. In college, a Hispanic is out of place, but Iliana feels even more out of place when she returns home to Brooklyn. A brother is having an adulterous affair with the wife of another brother, a sister lives with chickens, while another has visions of demons.
