Summary Relates events in the concentration camp from 1936 to 1945 under the Nazi regime, and from 1945 to 1950 under Russian occupation, making explicit distinctions between the two periods. 6,000 Jews were interned there on 9 November 1938 during the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. In 1942, the new extermination station Z was inaugurated with the murder of 250 Jews. In October 1942, 454 Jews were sent from this camp to Auschwitz. Although Sachsenhausen was not an extermination camp, 116,000 out of 250,000 interned died there or were murdered and burnt in mobile crematoria.
