Summary This is the story of Mirambo, the nineteenth-century leader of the numerous Nyamwezi peoples of East Africa, in what would become central Tanzania. He occupied a central position in the affairs of the Arabs and Europeans active during the 1870s and 1880s in this area. He was involved in the historical trends affecting his region including the rise and decline of the Arab position among the Nyamwezi, the success and failures of European missionaries, the sluggish progress of Leopold II of Belgium and his International African Association, and the efforts of the British Consul General in Zanzibar to spread influence.
