Editor: B.O. Flower.
Of the social and political reform magazines that found birth in the 1890's, the news-minded Arena was one of the most active. Created by Benjamin O. Flower, the son of a clergyman, the Arena's pages were open to poverty, sweatshops, municipal government, prison reform, psychic phenomena, unionism, women's rights, dress reform, and tax reform. A distinguished editor, Flower had the ability to arouse both pulpit and press with numerous exposes. A unique feature of the Arena was the pursuit of various causes at the same time. The Arena's circulation was around 25,000 copies for the most part. Although this figure was impressive in view of the Aren's competition with Forum, Century, Harper's and the Atlantic Monthly, it was never enough to show prosperity. The Arena was sold time after time, suspended for short periods, and finally merged into Christian work.
