Established by Freeman Hunt, this well-known general commerce magazine was an encyclopedia of commercial subjects, remarkable for its orderly arrangement of masses of material. It promised to discuss every subject interesting or useful to the merchant. The chief subjects were commercial statistics, commercial regulations and treaties, statistics of population, railroads, canals, and roads, mercantile law, and mercantile libraries and associations, the currency, insurance, banking, navigation, U.S. and foreign commerce, and biographies of successful merchants.
