Devoted to recording the antiquities of America, the Historical magazine began publication in 1857. The magazine was successively edited by John Ward Dean, George Folsom, J.G. Shea, and H.R. Stiles until 1866 when Henry B. Dawson, assumed the responsibilities of editor, publisher, and proprietor. Due to the last editor's ailing health, the magazine was sometimes published irregularly or suspended. Finally, in 1875, the publication ceased with the exception of a few extra numbers that appeared. However, the monthly left behind a volume of original papers, collections of original letters, correspondence, and diaries, historical society proceedings, biographies, book reviews and reprints of archaic tracts and poems.
Numbering Publication was suspended from Sept. to Dec. 1871, Apr. 1872-Mar. 1873. There were no regular numbers from Apr. 1874 to Mar. 1875, but extra numbers were published in Mar. and Dec. 1874, Jan., Mar. and May 1875.
Supplement Supplementary numbers were issued with v. 10, no. 7-12.
