The Port folio was from the beginning a magazine of literary and political ambition. Joseph Dennie, the first owner and editor, was by far the most flamboyant and successful; he strongly favored England's system over the newly formed American democratic government. The sections of poetry, biography, manners, fashion, and travel were more or less pointed criticisms of American character. In 1816 Harrison Hall purchased the magazine and named his brother, John E. Hall, as editor. Hall attempted to bring back the Port folio's old sparkle, but was not very successful. Throughout the life of the magazine it was plagued by monetary problems and finally ceased publication in December 1827.
