Duff cites Hugh Blair (1718-1800) as an authority on Ossian, a Gaelic hero and supposed poet of the third century A. D. Blair urged James MacPherson (1736-1796) to publish his purported translations of Ossian's poetry. It is generally held that while the poems are based on fragments of ancient Gaelic poetry, they are original compositions by MacPherson. cf. Dictionary of national biography. |
