Summary Excerpt: "This thesis is a study of the all Negro town of Boley located in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma. The study is principally a social one that stresses particularly the economic and social status of the people living there. The various schools, churches, clubs, and lodges of the town have given it a greater cultural value because they have been conducted as they have. The disturbances in these various social units have definitely contributed to the molding of civic pride and loyalty within the community. By their disturbances they have learned the importance of cooperation which is immediately manifested when the town or any of its citizenry is exposed to abuse. The Indian occupation of the territory and the early history of the town are briefly told in the first two chapters in order to establish the necessary historical background for what has happened during the succeeding years and to appreciate what is happening there now. The town is the oldest of its kind in the state and the largest one of its kind in the United States. It is for these reasons that it enjoys the political distinction that is portrayed in this study. The materials used in this study were Minutes and Records of the City Council, Minutes and Records of the City Clerk, County Commissioners Records, Deed Books, Minutes and Records of various organizations - business and social in the town, interviews with citizens who have lived there since the beginning in 1904, and newspapers that have been published there from time to time."
