Summary This collection of shorts originally produced from the 1940s to 60s features a grab-bag of Americana -- everything from washing machines, to home budgets, to working with women, to building a dog house. Why Budget details how three very different people manage their finances. A House for Albert demonstrates how to build a doghouse narrated by a St. Bernard. The Trouble with Women is from McGraw-Hill Film's plant supervisor's problem series about the good points and drawbacks of women factory workers. The last three films promote Atlas car batteries, and service at Standard and Humble gas stations.
Contents This is living / Bendix Corporation ; Cliff Norton -- Oh, dry those tears / Bendix Corporation ; Cliff Norton -- Why budget / Centron (1950) -- House for Albert (1956) -- The Trouble with women / McGraw-Hill Films -- Bonus business -- Personalized lubrication service (1946)-- Service.
Note This is Living (b&w) stars "your old friend" CLIFF NORTON (a then popular radio announcer, character actor, and TV personality) as an Efficiency Expert defeated when he tries to wash clothes with an old ringer washing machine. Ah, but when his wife forces him to buy a new Bendix Economat Agitator-Washer, they learn "what real living is"!
Oh, Dry Those Tears (b&w) has Cliff Norton as a TV weather man who hawks the Bendix Automatic Dryer as a way to dry clothes without concern for the weather. This angers viewer HOPE SUMMERS (The Andy Griffith Show) who explains to him the other reasons why the Bendix Dryer is so wonderful, which are then illustrated with Mr. Norton in drag. Yes, in drag.
Why Budget (1950; b&w) has the gang at Centron detailing how three very different people manage their finances. Betty Wilson, pretty young stenographer, wants a new fur coat. Bank president J.D. Parry wants a small airplane. And Joe Clark, day laborer, wants to send his son to college. They all keep various household budgets and spend accordingly. For instance, Parry doesn't buy that new car he wants, while Betty cuts back on ice cream sodas, and stays away from those insidious "installment plans." But, uh-oh, Joe screws up his budget when he splurges for a shotgun.
A House for Albert (1956; b&w) stars a St. Bernard dog who likes to lie on the couch much to the annoyance of Mom and Dad Brandon. So when Dad sees a doghouse in a magazine, he decides to build one in the backyard, using his son Tommy as cheap labor. All of which is cloyingly narrated by said St. Bernard.
The Trouble with Women (b&w) is driving foreman Bradshaw crazy. One complains about moving to a new desk, another leaves to get married, and the new girl is absent. Are women bad workers, or is Bradshaw just a mean ol' misogynist?
Bonus Business (b&w) extols the virtues of the new Atlas HD-1 car battery by comparing it to a bunch of then-current batteries from other companies. But the real highlight of this one is a glimpse of the Atlas labs with the kind of mad-doctor equipment that looks like it was borrowed from a Universal horror film!
Personalized Lubrication Service (1946; b&w) has customer Joe Oakes bringing his car into the local Standard gas station because it has a squeak.
Service (color) shows how two disgruntled customers hate the rotten service the new attendant gives them at the local Humble station.
