Summary This project sought to evaluate the impacts of high wind penetrations on the U.S. Eastern Interconnection and analyze how different unit commitment strategies may affect these impacts. In January 2010, the Eastern Wind Integration and Transmission Study (EWITS) was published. The study evaluated the operating impacts for 20% and 30% wind power on the majority of the Eastern Interconnection. It also evaluated different scenarios of where the wind was located as well as different transmission plans. This follow-up study was intended to further the analysis performed in EWITS by focusing on the impacts of advanced unit commitment strategies used at high penetrations of wind power. It will point to both the effect that various assumptions about modeling unit commitment will have on integration studies, as well as the effect that the strategies will have on actual system operation with high wind power.
