Summary America's obsession with the automobile continues with these car culture classics from Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge and Pontiac. In So You Want Thrills country bumpkin Henry tries to join the Stock Car Death Dodgers by attempting to do the truck jump stunt but -- oops! -- crashes head on. Thank goodness Henry was driving a 1948 Dodge with "fluid drive"!
Contents So you want thrills -- How to go places / Gale Storm -- Highway driving -- It's been there before / Douglas Kennedy -- One step further -- The Banker buys a car -- Look who's talking -- The Approach -- Torque talk.
Note So You Want Thrills (b&w) takes place at a local carnival where country bumpkin Henry tries to join JIMMIE LYNCH's Stock Car Death Dodgers. Henry tries to do the truck jump stunt but -- oops! -- crashes head on. Thank goodness Henry was driving a 1948 Dodge with "fluid drive"! In fact, he soon learns how to drive his car right up the steps of City Hall!
How to Go Places (b&w) is an instruction manual starring Fifties TV star GALE STORM (My Little Margie), her hubbie, and their three kids all of whom take a summer trip across the USA in the 1954 family Chevy!
Highway Driving (b&w) is an elaborate questionnaire from the Ford Motor Company that asks such particulars as "Is Your Car Ready for the Road?" "How Do I Guard Against Collisions?" and, our favorite, "Can You Keep Your Car on the Road?"
It's Been There Before (b&w) is part of Chevrolet's 1955 "Modern Engineering Series" in which DOUGLAS KENNEDY (The Amazing Transparent Man) introduces us to a chubby man who does "gravel hauling," a "timber boss for a big lumber company," and a "field superintendent and trouble-shooter for a uranium mining company," all of whom, of course, use rigorously tested, tailor-made Chevy trucks.
One Step Further (b&w), #2 in Chevrolet's 1955 "Modern Engineering Series," eagerly shows Chevy cars driving off the main roads into water, "murderous wagon trails," and "secret haunts." And get a load of those Jumbo-Drum brakes!
The Banker Buys a Car (b&w) finds middle-aged banker George Vault (silent-film veteran GEORGE LYTELL) infuriated that his wife has arranged financing for their new car from the auto dealership rather than his bank. Ah, but when George hears all about the Universal C.I.T. plan, the old geezer changes his mind. Why, "it's better than belonging to a national motor club!"
Look Who's Talking (b&w) sings the praises of used cars, especially when they're bought from a Pontiac salesman who, of course, only tells the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
The Approach (b&w), part of Pontiac's 1952 "Destination Dotted Line" Training Program for Retail Salesman, shows the excessive lengths Pontiac dealer Hal Richards will go to snare a new customer. Which, of course, is seen as a good thing.
Torque Talk (b&w) is preceded by the words: "This is Confidential Information for Chevrolet sales personnel only!" It then explains why "Road Torque" not only makes Chevy "better than the Ford or Plymouth," but lets three 1955 NASCAR drivers prove it.
