Summary Substance use disorders (SUDs) are complex, lifelong conditions that affect not just people in recovery but their families as well. To give a person struggling with alcohol and drug addiction the greatest chance at lasting, successful recovery, families often need to be included in treatment and services. This TIP is designed to help providers and administrators better understand how to do this by describing the unique impacts of SUDs on families; how family functioning and dynamics can both support and interfere with recovery; and how treatments, services, and programs can best be tailored to families' needs.
