Benthic habitats of the main Hawaiian Islands [electronic resource] / Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment, Biogeography Program.
[Silver Spring, Md. : U.S. Dept. of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Ocean Service, National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment, Biogeography Program, 2003]
Provides a benthic habitat classification manual, a benthic habitat map for the nearshore waters of the main Hawaiian Islands, and supplemental geospatial data. Twenty-seven distinct benthic habitat types within eleven zones were mapped directly into a geographic information system (GIS) using visual interpretation of orthorectified aerial photographs and hyperspectral imagery. Benthic features were mapped that covered an area of 790 kmp2s. In all, 204 kmp2s of unconsolidated sediment, 171 kmp2s of submerged vegetation, and 415 kmp2s of coral reef and colonized hardbottom were mapped.
Mode of access via the NOS Biogeography Program web site.
A limited version atlas: Benthic habitats of the main Hawain Island, interm product 2003, was developed from the disk's maps to accommodate specific request from Hawaiian user community to support management and scientific needs. It was distributed to deposiotry libraries on Shipping list no.: 2004-0026-S, under Item 0191-B-11, as C 55.418/6:B 44.
