Summary |
"The repertory presented in this edition, a cycle of polyphonic hymns for the entire liturgical year preserved in Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Mus Hs. 16197, was created during the turbulent second half of the sixteenth century in the Habsburg homelands, the southeastern quarter of the Holy Roman Empire. Torn apart by the Reformation, the region became the home ground of the Counter-Reformation, which aimed to restore the primacy of the Catholic Church. Musically enriched vesper services played an important role in Counter-Reformatory efforts to attract the populace back to Catholicism. The anonymous hymn settings preserved in Vienna 16197, scored for four through six voices, exemplify the music used at such services and constitute a small addition to the number of known vesper hymn cycles from this period." -- Provided by publisher. |
