Summary |
This body of work covers the photographs of Carleton Watkins between 1858 and 1891. The authors have assembled and catalogued here all of Watkins's known "mammoth" (18 x 22 in.) glass-plate photographs. These include views of Yosemite, San Francisco Bay, counties up and down the pacific Coast, as well as mining pictures, lumber mills, the building of railroads, and the stunning landscapes and growing towns throughout the early history of the western United States. The catalogue is organized by region, with an introduction and reproductions of vintage maps, followed by full documentation for each mammoth photograph. |
