Summary Presents films produced from the 1940s through '60s. Americana and car culture are inexorably linked -- which is why three of these shorts once again focus on automobiles and those funny guys down at the local service station... In An Honorary Doctor's Degree in Driving TV announcer Durward Kirby guides us through some driving footage that shows us what might happen on the road -- especially with "brake braggers," "armless wonders," and "tail huggers" -- dangers that never upset an expert "doctor of driving"!
Contents Love-o-Mike -- Turn about is fair play / Joe Crehan ; directed by JeanYarbrough -- Performance tells -- An Honorary doctor's degree in driving / Durward Kirby (1952)
Note Love-O-Mike (b&w) is about the sheer simple joy of selling Atlas tires.
Turn About is Fair Play (b&w) is something of a minor showcase for character actor JOE CREHAN, best known to Something Weird fans as the fuddy-duddy doctor of Street Corner and Because of Eve (as well as playing Chief Brandon in the Dick Tracy films). Here, Joe's the owner of an Atlas service station who wonders why Henry Morgan, his Atlas competition, does better business. Directed by cheapie specialist JEAN (Hillbillys in a Haunted House) YARBROUGH.
Performance Tells (b&w) compares Atlas products to the competition by taking us behind the scenes of the Atlas labs where Serious Guys in White Lab Coats subject mufflers to "positive turbulence" and check how oil filters deal with "poisonous gunk" and stick seal-beamed headlights in a tank of water.
An Honorary Doctor's Degree in Driving (1952; b&w) has TV announcer DURWARD KIRBY guiding us through some point-of-viewing driving footage that shows us what might happen on the road -- especially with "brake braggers," "armless wonders," and "tail huggers" -- dangers that never upset an expert "doctor of driving"!
