Summary	In the 2000s, child murders by mothers repeatedly caused spectacular media coverage. The author examines the media discourse on child murder during these years, its interaction with discourses on East and West Germany, and the emergence of the discourse on the East German child murderer. Using this discourse as an example, she shows how the East is 'ossified' and made into a West German norm and normality.
