Summary Any device that plugs into wall outlets distributed throughout a building is a plug load. These loads do not relate to general lighting, heating, ventilation, cooling, or water heating, and typically do not provide comfort to the occupants. This report documents the methods and results of a plug load study of the Environmental Protection Agency's Region 8 Headquarters in Denver, Colorado, conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The study quantified the effect of mechanical and behavioral change approaches on plug load energy reduction and identified effective ways to reduce plug load energy. Load reduction approaches included automated energy management systems and behavioral change strategies.
