Summary |
"The Donna Schneier collection comprises landmark objects from a pivotal and intriguing period in the history of twentieth-century jewelry. The introduction of non-precious materials in the post-War era marked a profound change in the perception of the art form and questioned the role of jewelry and personal adornment in contemporary society. Using aluminum, rubber, plastic, newspaper, and even clothspins, the jewelry artists represented in 'Zero Karat' created innovative and beautiful works that communicate the signficance of ideas, design, and execution. They challenged the traditional view that the value of jewelry resided primarily in the intrinsic value of its raw materials, and their experimentation opened the door to a vibrant new form of object making and a new interpretation of the meaning of jewelry."-foreward. Includes two works by Marjorie Schick. |
