Summary Presents film shorts produced from the 1950s to the 1960s, most of which spotlight travel destinations where you and your family can fall in love with America. Features four Jam Handy Technicolor shorts made for Chevrolet which will give zest to your driving pleasure...in a Chevy, of course. Midwest Holiday is a travelogue for Standard Oil in which a reporter and some friends see the sights together -- from Lake Michigan to the Rocky Mountains, encompassing Old Faithful and the Iowa State Fair -- until love blooms. Engagement Party is a romance which quickly detours into a pitch for S&H Green Stamps!
Contents Engagement party / starring Gloria Talbot, Leon Ames, Mae Clarke (1956) -- Midwest holiday / Wilding Productions for Standard Oil (1952) -- Roads to romance: The Highway of Tomorrow: The Pennsylvania Turnpike ; Bluegrass Land of Kentucky ; Lakes of the Twin Cities / Jam Handy for Chevrolet -- Rainbow is yours / Jam Handy (1951) -- Inner self-service -- Seahorse spectacular (1962)
Note Engagement Party (color) is romance-tinged bait-and-switch: what starts out as a tension-filled drama about the upcoming marriage between George and Mary (GLORIA TALBOT, The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll) and their worries about a financial future quickly detours into a pitch for S&H Green Stamps! What the hell are S&H Green Stamps, you ask. Ahhhhh, travel back to 1956 and find out in this loopy time-capsule also starring Hollywood veterans LEON AMES (The Postman Always Rings Twice) and MAE CLARKE (Frankenstein), and directed by the man who made Tarzan's Desert Mystery.
Midwest Holiday (1952, color) is a Wilding Productions travelogue for Standard Oil in which an angry reporter returns "to the grass roots" by driving around the Midwest in search of a pretty girl traveling with her dad and a trailer. After their car goes up in flames, Connie, daddy, and the reporter see the sights together -- from Lake Michigan to the Rocky Mountains, encompassing Old Faithful and the Iowa State Fair -- until love blooms.
Roads to Romance is a series of Jam Handy Technicolor shorts made for Chevrolet which spotlight travel destinations where you and your family can fall in love with America. Yes indeed, just think of the rest and relaxation you and your family will have on The Highway of Tomorrow: The Pennsylvania Turnpike where "sweeping curves and tunnels carved under the lofty mountains give new zest to your driving pleasure!" The Bluegrass Land of Kentucky offers towns like Ashland which "are rich in scenic and historical interest!" And the Lakes of the Twin Cities are the "gateways to the vacationlands in the north!" And, remember, your Chevy "will be your magic carpet that will carry you to the land of your heart's desire!"
The Rainbow is Yours (1951; color) is another Jam Handy Chevy short which quickly goes for the hard sell, as the "Rainbow" in the title is not so much a romantic destination but the variety of colors Chevrolet's 1952 line of autos come in: "subtle harmonies in color, meticulous perfection of detail, thoughtfully combined to offer a rainbow range of personalized selection!" And, oooooh, that Belair is "the style sensation of them all!"
Inner Self-Service (color) is another Twilight Zone-ish piece of Americana in which Al Drake, the morose, disgruntled owner of his own gas station, ignores the problems of his customers' cars until his "better judgment" leaves his body and, like a transparent ghost, berates Al for his lousy service: "Half-way service means half-way profits!"
Seahorse Spectacular (1962; color) features a guy on water piano (say, what?) as well as water skiing without skis ("This guy is amphibious!") in a Cypress Garden water show plugging the 1962 Seahorse line of Johnson Outboard Motors!
