Summary "When General William W. Hartzog, the ninth commanding general of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, authored the first edition of American Military Heritage in 1998, his vision was to create a concise introductory guide to the history of the United States Army. He wanted junior officers and noncommissioned officers to use it both as a tool for personal professional development and for the education and inspiration of the soldiers they led. The seventeenth commander, General Paul E. Funk II, believes just as passionately in the long heritage of the American profession of arms. He saw great value in revising this book to bring it up to date with the Army's history since the late 1990s, and he turned to the Army's Center of Military History (CMH), which has been a part of Training and Doctrine Command since 2019. The result of that collaborative process is Army History and Heritage"-- Provided by publisher.
