Summary "The summer sun was setting on the farm fields around the tiny village of Givry bringing 20 July 1918 to a close. Dark groupings of trees cast their shade on the slopes between the small French towns of Belleau and Bouresches. The trampled fields of wheat belied the struggle that had taken place over the mile of sloping ground between the hollows of Belleau Wood and the low rise that had been labelled by Allied planners as Hill 190. Crumpled olive drab-clad bodies told the tale of murderous machine gun fire and the deadly accuracy of German artillery. On the summit of the hill, 38 year old Maj. James W. Hanson, commanding the US Army's 1st Battalion, 103rd Infantry Regiment, paused from directing the digging-in efforts to jot down a note: 'Tell the Colonel we have taken and are consolidating the position, but have had tremendous losses, have less than 200 men in the line available for duty but will hold the position to the last man'" -- Provided by publisher.
