Note With reproductions of the three original dedications.
Original title: The second booke of ayres, some, to sing and play to the base-violl alone: others, to be sung to the lute and base violl. With new corantoes pauins, almaines; as also diuers new descants vpon old grounds, set to the lyra-violl.
Nos. 1-16 are for solo voice; nos. 17-18 are duets. The bass viol accompaniment has been realized for piano. The lute accompaniment to nos. 2, 5, 9 and 15 has been transcribed from the tablature into modern notation for piano, and the part for bass viol omitted.
The words of nos. 4, 8, and 9 are by John Donne, Joshua Sylvester and Sir Philip Sidney respectively.
