Summary A collection of short films of "all things Americana" originally produced in the 1950s and 60s. The Forest and the Woodsman shows what fun it is to be a "forest worker" in New England. Part-Time Farmer visits Maine where part-time agriculture is a way of life! Secret Cargo joins a scuba diver who is trying to find the underwater remains of the schooner The Martha Towne, a blockade runner for the South during the Civil War, that was sunk off the coast of Florida in 1864. Beer Belongs takes a tour of a 1953 brewery. A Sound Approach to Better Listening celebrates the joys of "life-like high fidelity."
Contents Forest and the woodsman -- Part-time farmer -- Secret cargo (30 min.) -- Beer belongs (1953) -- A Sound approach to better listening at home.
Note The Forest and the Woodsman (color) shows what delirious fun it is to be a "forest worker" in New England! Yes sir, you get to chop down giant trees with cool chainsaws, live in a snow-covered logging camp complete with TV sets, sit through dreary slide shows on safety, eat a cafeteria-style diet of 5000 calories a day, attach a log to your favorite horse, bulldoze a branch road, operate a variety of odd little tractors, do some brook and river driving, and know that those maimed on the job get the best in modern rehabilitation! Then there's the fun of Maine Broiler Day where part-time farmers can eat at a massive barbecue! And look! There's EDMUND MUSKIE crowning the Barbecue Queen!
Secret Cargo (color) is a fascinating change of pace for this series since it takes place off-shore as a scuba diver and his wife try to find the underwater remains of the schooner The Martha Towne, a blockade runner for the South during the Civil War, that was sunk off the coast of Florida in 1864 while carrying some sort of highly valuable "secret cargo." Sure enough, after plenty of gorgeous underwater photography, the couple not only find the ship, but a treasure chest as well. Does it contain gold? Military secrets? Horse shoes? You'll also notice that because this 30-minute film is sponsored by Hiram Walker distillers, everyone not underwater is shown happily boozing it up!
Beer Belongs (1953; color) is "dedicated to the millions of Americans whose steadily increasing recognition of beer has made brewing one of this country's great industries!" After a brief history of beer, we're taken inside a brewery so full of giant vats and copper kettles and machines with big dials that it looks like something out of Metropolis! Ground malt is mixed with hot water and stirred into mash until boiled corn and rice are added. The brew is then mixed with yeast and fermentation takes place.
A Sound Approach to Better Listening at Home (color) shows music lovers how an amplifier, tuner, and speaker can let Americans listen to music in their living rooms in incredible, life-like high-fidelity!
