Summary Further vocational training has rarely been the subject of educational economics analyses. The authors of this volume address this topic from a European perspective. J. Münch asks whether we can talk about a zEuropean systemy of further training. He analyzes the further training structures of various European countries as well as their financing patterns and asks about the cost structures of further vocational training. H.-J. Bodenhöfer and F. Ofner investigate what options are available to young Austrians following a successful apprenticeship and what importance is attached to continuing professional development. They ask about the interactions between life situation, motivation and success in further training among young people. U. Backes-Gellner observes that there are evident differences in the vocational training arrangements of the European countries and from this derives the question of convergence tendencies between the vocational training systems of the European countries. The author looks for company training strategies that could be responsible for convergence or divergence tendencies. R.v. Weizsäcker looks at the fundamental problem of the connection between equal opportunities, status mobility and public investment in education. His primary concern is the question of whether stable income distribution relationships are accompanied by a high or low level of individual and social mobility, i.e. whether the goal of equal opportunities is compatible with the goal of mobility. All four contributions reach interesting and e.g. T. surprising results.
