Summary By the end of 2015, twenty-three states and the District of Columbia had legalized medical marijuana. Four states had legalized recreational marijuana, and more states are likely to follow suit. Many doctors support the use of marijuana to treat a variety of ailments, including pain, muscle spasms, and nausea. Yet long-term, scientific studies on the effectiveness and harmful side effects of marijuana are still to come.
