In this period, the conflict between the longing for the past and the impatience to achieve modernity subjected education to a swing of advances and setbacks, like on the battlefield where sometimes there is no clear definition of winners and losers. Here, rather, there were losers: school buildings occupied by the military, budgets devoted to coups, brilliant students cut short in their careers, ignored or ignorant teachers. This book gives an account of projects, dreams and illusions and the obstacles that the harsh reality of the Mexican 19th century stood in his way. |
