Summary "This serenata or Singegedicht, drawn from a familiar episode in Cervantes' immortal novel, is a small but fully developed comic opera lasting some forty minutes, one of the most attractive works composed by Telemann in his old age. Based on a libretto by Daniel Schiebeler, Don Quichotte belongs to a genre that leads directly to the singspiel. Telemann's approach to singspiel features carefully wrought solo and ensemble scenes, impressive not only for their handling of comic events involving the noble cavalier and his cunning shield bearer but also for the pre-classical style of the music. The present edition is the first publication of this work and is based on Telemann's autograph and all surviving textual and musical sources." -- Provided by publisher.
