Summary "Song cycles were not new to the nineteenth century, but they did acquire a new symbolic significance that impacted aesthetics. In the latter half of the century, the Romantics codified their ideal cycle in lexicons, basing their definitions on Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte. Many of the cycles written between 1790 and 1850, however, did not resemble Beethoven's and continue to be overlooked as cycles. The introductory essay examines early-nineteenth-century concepts of "cycle" and the ways in which song cycles cohere. The volume focuses on three types of topical cycles, presenting critical editions of six examples. Composers range from minor, such as Friedrich Hurka and Paul Wineberger; to popular but forgotten, such as J. H. K. Bornhardt and Friedrich Schneider; to still well-known, such as Friedrich Himmel and Carl Maria von Weber. The edition provides background information for each composer, poet, publisher, and cycle; offers notes on performing the cycles; and includes translations of and commentaries on the poetry, as well as a glossary of deities and characters that appear in the cycles." -- Provided by publisher.
