The transition to a different professional field presents employees with new tasks and challenges. What individual prerequisites must be met and what institutional framework conditions should be in place for a successful professional crossover? The study shows that the crossover between professional fields is a holistic biographical process that is evident in the respondents' biographies not only in their professional lives. Successful transitions between professional fields are determined by the individual's hybrid competencies and are rarely supported by institutional and social support measures.
