"This volume gives a fair sampling of Antonio Cesti's (1623-1669) approach to the chamber duet, which is a special case of the Italian cantata. The addition of a second voice affords opportunities for contrast between solo and concerted sections, and, within solo sections, for contrast between the two voices. The stylistic picture that emerges from these works matches well that of the operas Cesti composed in the last decades of his life." -- Provided by publisher. |
