Summary The structural transformation in healthcare is often touted as simultaneously achieving efficiency and quality gains. However, a sociological perspective reveals that what lies behind the "economization" of healthcare is a highly controversial endeavor. Drawing on relational social theories, Kaspar Molzberger undertakes a redefinition. His practice-oriented sociological study clarifies the challenges faced by professional groups in hospitals who operate according to professional values as they strive to comply with neoliberal management reforms. There is a risk of a "reversal of the ordinary": the autonomy of medical and nursing professions is now treated as calculative, and consequently, hospitals must accommodate increasing numbers of patients to survive.
