Summary Kenneth A. Spencer, son of the operator of the Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company, prior to World War II visualized the utilization of coal, a plentiful raw product of Southeast Kansas, in a process to manufacture ammonium nitrates which could be used in explosives in time of war and could readily be converted into the manufacture of fertilizer in time of peace.
